TRAVELLING THE GREAT NORTHERN HIGHWAY WEST

Wayne and I decided to "Free Camp" through this area and take our time and even though it is a very remote part of West Australia (some call it the Last Frontier) we enjoyed our stays at Dunham River Rest Area, Spring Creek Rest Area and Mary Pool Rest Area.

The bird life at Dunham River Rest Area was delightful to see with plenty of different species to try to catch photos of.  Not very successful I might say!!

Spring Creek Rest Area is by the turnoff to the Bungle Bungles which is out on a 100 klm drive on corrigated rough metal road so we stayed for two nights here just chilling out and talking to other travellers that had been out there.  Perhaps next time we come this way we will either hire a 4WD or take a helecopter/plane flight over them and the Wolf Creek crater.  Very dry here and no water in the river at all.
Dry Spring Creek

This looks like we might be in for a change of weather?!

Mary Pool Rest Area we encountered some people that fueled up at the cheapest Kununurra diesel pump just out of town and they came over to invite us to join them and two other couples around their campfire for the evening.  I have never laughed so much for a very long time.  Consequently, consumed heaps and laughed long!!!!  The clouds were gathering and the very next day the rain came down.  Still have a cold so decided to stay two nights here before travelling on into Fitzroy Creek.

Nothing but spinifex covered mounds amongest the plains.

Mary Pool Crossing where up to 200 vans etc can park for the night

Even the tour busses call in and have lunch here.

We went for a walk over the dry riverbed and the trees were alive with swarking corellas.

Helecopter herding the cattle away from the river before the rains came.

Luckily the water receded quickly and it was not too bogey to drive out.
