LAKE ARGYLE

This was the first place we could not phone ahead and book into.  It is first in-first served, so pulled up at the rest area on the Lake Argyle Road for the night after having battery problems and had to get into Kununurra and buy 2 new batteries.

WOW - we got a great roomy drive-thru site with power for 2 nights.  The Infinity Pool is just a beautiful setting for the Resort overlooking the man-made lake formed int eh early 1970's.  Would you believe the lake is 20 times the size of Sydney Harbour and is home to approx. 30,000 freshwater crocodiles, 26 species of native fish and 3 varieties of freshwater tortoise. It is also habititat to more than 270 bird species and other wildlife.

Driving over the Dam Wall with Lake Argyle to the right.

Another inlet of this beautiful lake with houseboats and catamarans to kyacks.

Durack Homestead Museum was an original homestead moved up to higher ground before the lake was formed.  Also all the ancestor's graveyard were placed along the fenceline where the bower bird's have hade a couple of delightful nests around the grounds.

The Ord River Gorge Walk Trail takes one up to the top of the 250 metres Aerial Hill to a rugged climb up to 400 metres extension to the top of the Ord River gorge cliffs and look down to the dam wall.  Vessals have cruises from Kununurra some 55 klms. scenic cruise to Lake Argyle.

Both Wayne and I felt Lake Argyle was a truly beautiful and serene spot in WA.

FAREWELL DARWIN

We Are Off On The Road Again.  (I will post our Darwin & surrounds at a later date)

After spending two months in and around Darwin area we headed south on the Stuart Hwy stopping over at the Pussy Cat Flats Park, Pine Creek for the first night before calling back into Edith Falls Camp Ground Nitmiluk NP where we enjoyed a delightful soak/swim in the plunge pool.  Very popular spot and were lucky to get in for the night.

Parked at the finishing line of the old racetrack that closed 2010.

Once in Katherine it was a right turn heading west on the Victoria Hwy where we used the free camps along the way for the next three nights.

Stopped at Victoria River for a break and photos.  We marvel at the escarpments with deep rich red rocks. Several folk are bicycling and painting their way along this highway and we have encountered them on several occasions.

The Victoria River

Timber Creek has a very interesting information board which tells one among other facts, of a large boar tree in the town and a "Gregory Tree" just off the highway further along the road the road which I thought might be worth a look at.  OH DEAR  3.5klms of heavy corrigated dusty road did not make Wayne a happy man!!!  (Still worth the look.)  Full of history of a gentleman that arrived up this Victoria River by sail boat in the 1880's who rode horses from up here as far east to the Gulf and as far south as Brisbane.  He set up camp here amongst the local aboriginals.

We Are About To Cross The Border into West Australia.  Yee Ha!
